Chapter Twenty-Four

Erica managed to get through the rest of the day without any more drama.

They were several days into a murder investigation, though, and she still didn’t have any solid suspects. The search on the dropshipping premises was ongoing, but they hadn’t found anything yet. Even if they did find what they were looking for, Luke Heale might be guilty of intent to supply, but that didn’t make him a murderer. Even he wouldn’t be stupid enough to bring that much attention to his business unnecessarily by pinning a man’s body to the railings.

During the interview, which DI Julian Colgan had led, Heale had insisted there were no gangs or other competitors that he’d had a run-in with who might have left poor Taylor Quigley’s body as a message. He denied that Taylor had ever bought drugs from him, but Erica still suspected the young man had been heading that way in order to score. Had someone followed him and seen their opportunity?

Or was Luke Heale lying to save his own arse?

The CCTV from Heale’s business hadn’t shown anything either. With the cameras pointed in the opposite direction of the murder, and that Heale only had them running during the hours he wasn’t there—most likely to protect his own neck than anything else—they hadn’t made any further progress.

It was incredibly frustrating.

If only they had Taylor’s phone. She was sure it would have a wealth of information on it, but so far it hadn’t turned up. She’d also heard from digital forensics, and though they’d managed to get into the laptop, it didn’t look as though there was anything incriminating on it.

Hannah Rudd approached her desk. “Boss, I’ve been going through all the past orders from the dropshipping business and searched Taylor’s name and address, and this came up.”

She pushed a sheet of paper under Erica’s nose. Several lines had been highlighted. “That’s Taylor’s address, right? It’s not his full name, but it’s enough to know those packages were intended for him.”

Erica scanned the list. Taylor had been ordering items from Heale every other week for the past few months.

“How many pairs of socks does one person need?” she commented.

“Exactly. I bet it wasn’t only socks that were in the package.”

“Good work, Hannah. Did I tell you that I’m going to miss you?”

Hannah grinned. “By the sound of things, you’re not going to be here to miss me.”

“Oh, true, though only for a short while.”

They had something linking Heale to Taylor now, but that still didn’t mean Heale had been the one to kill him. She glanced over to where Shawn was at his desk, and her stomach clenched. There was a new kind of tension between them, and she wished she could make everything go back to how they had been. She got the feeling they weren’t going to be playing happy families when they got home tonight.
